How to Wheelie: A Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know before your first wheelie session.
So you want to learn to wheelie. Good call.
There's a reason every rider, at some point, thinks about lifting the front wheel. It's one of the most iconic skills in motorcycling — and, when done correctly, one of the most useful for building bike control.
But here's the thing nobody tells you: learning to wheelie on the street is dangerous, expensive, and illegal. One mistake on public roads can mean a crashed bike, a ticket, or worse.
That's where we come in. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first session on the Wheelie Clinic machine.
What Is a Wheelie, Really?
A wheelie happens when you accelerate hard enough to transfer the bike's weight to the rear wheel, lifting the front. It's controlled by the throttle, clutch, and your body position.
The key is finding the balance point — that sweet spot where the bike is perfectly balanced on the rear wheel. Too far back and you loop out. Too far forward and the front drops. On our machine, you find that balance point safely, every time.
What You'll Need
- • A motorcycle — yours or one of our fleet bikes
- • Full safety gear — helmet, gloves, jacket, boots (we provide if needed)
- • An open mind — you're going to learn differently than you expected
What Happens in a Session
1. Briefing. Your instructor walks you through the machine, the safety systems, and what you'll be doing. No surprises.
2. Mounting. Your bike gets strapped into our custom wheelie machine. You sit on the bike, start the engine, and get comfortable.
3. First lift. We start small — just a few inches. You feel the front wheel come up, the balance point, and how the bike responds. Your instructor is right there, talking you through every second.
4. Progression. As you get comfortable, we increase the angle. By the end of your first session, you'll be holding controlled wheelies at a height you never thought possible.
Why the Machine Matters
Learning on a wheelie machine is fundamentally different from learning on the street:
- • No risk of looping out. The machine limits the angle, so you can't go over backward.
- • No traffic. You're indoors, focused entirely on technique.
- • Real-time coaching. Your instructor can see exactly what you're doing and correct it immediately.
- • Repeatable practice. Each run is the same setup, so you can isolate and improve specific skills.
